Shem Compion

Africa Geographic reports Shem Compion as “one of the top three nature and wildlife photographers in Southern Africa”.

Shem is an adventurer, nature photographer, successful author and photography hide designer whose passion is to share his love for and experience of the natural world.  His full time occupation is wildlife and nature photography.  His photography explores every aspect of the natural world, making him one of the most diverse and celebrated natural history photographers in the Southern Hemisphere; his work has been awarded and published worldwide. For an overview of the books he has published, click: Shem’s Books.

Born in Africa, Shem travels internationally to share his photography, his knowledge and his natural history expertise with photographers and travellers of kindred spirit. To view some of his award winning images, click: Shem’s Images.

Upon discovering his love of photography, he decided the best way to become a nature photographer was to live like one.  He sold his belongings, quit his “day job” and for seven months traveled through Africa in a Landrover exploring the majority of the well known game reserves. On this adventurous trip to mostly remote destinations, he captured many of his first iconic images – ones that have underpinned and accelerated his professional career. From those carefree days, he continued  work as a successful professional photographer and in 2005 established what has become South Africa’s premier photographic safari company – C4 Images & Safaris.

Ever the adventurer and explorer, he still undertakes one trip per year, generally alone, to a wild and remote destination. Here he “clears his mind” and “becomes one with his camera” – often producing some of his best and most compelling photographic work.

Shem is continually honing his skills on being a naturalist and a photographer. These skills have been recognized and used by many clients, including the BBC Natural history Unit on the multi-award winning BBC Planet Earth series.  He was involved in the Great Plains series depicting lions hunting elephants in the Savuti, Botswana.

He still personally hosts a number of photographic workshops and photographic tours each year as well as guiding his private photo safaris.

Iconic Images International has worked closely with Shem and his team at C4 Images and Safaris for six years and Shem and Denis Glennon AO personally co-lead all of Iconic Images’ photography safaris in Africa.

Workshop Content

The following provides an outline of the individual presentations by Shem and Denis.

  1. Evolution of Shem’s Photographic Style: A particular and preferably an easily recognisable photographic style is the essence of one’s photography. Like personality, style develops over time to continually improve our work and artistic endeavours. Additionally, the style itself needs to have context and meaning not only for the photographer but also for the viewer. How this relevance is achieved is the crux of this presentation and reveals Shem’s own personal evolution as a photographer.
  2. From A Passion For Photography to Extraordinary Experiences: Denis conceived and created Iconic Images International to offer premier photography safaris and photo tours to Australians and an international audience. The last six years has been an exciting journey and reveals an uplifting story about the extraordinary experiences of many who travel with him. The lessons learned on the journey will inspire and give confidence to emerging photographers and seasoned professionals alike. He seamlessly ties the lessons learned along the way, into the emergence of his own style as “a photographer without prejudice”. Those wishing to develop their photography business will be amazed as the simple formula and approaches Denis used to create Australia’s premier photo safaris.
  3. Ten Years of Sustained Inspiration: How do you maintain motivation, creativity and inspiration as well as continually refining your photographic art over a period of ten years or longer? Shem has successfully done this yet he is of the view his best work is yet to come. He will outline the ingredients of this frequently elusive recipe?
  4. My “First Real Break” in Photography: Both Shem and Denis will speak for a maximum of seven minutes each on this topic and then throw the session open to questions. This “Punch & Judy” presentation works well for attendees. It generates much stimulating discussion with many attendees relating their own “first breaks”. The entire session will last a maximum of 30 minutes.
  5. From Photographer to Successful Author:  Shem has published five books and is currently working on two more. The publishing world is a minefield for the novice and in this presentation Shem freely and generously shares his experiences (both the uplifting and the bruising) on how he has become a successful photography author. Listening to his very relevant and hard-won advice on how to enter the publishing world may well be the highlight of the day for some attendees. The successful publishing of the first book is always a huge step forward for every photographer.
  6. Today’s Wildlife/Natural History Photographer: The definition of a wildlife/natural history photographer has changed considerably over the last fifteen years. Shem has navigated these years to emerge as one of the most successful photographers  in the fast moving South African photographic environment where there are more professional wildlife photographers per capita than anywhere else on the planet. How he has done this makes for a powerful presentation.  He will share his reasons why and how he manages to continue to follow his dream and make a very good living as a photographer – a tough call in any genre of this profession. The valuable skills he has honed will be of interest to both hobby and commercial photographers.
  7. Shape, Form & Texture: An intriguing look by Shem at how to search for and conceive beyond regular composition to create compelling images.
  8. Final Session of Q & A: This will commence no later than 4.15pm and finish at 4.30pm to ensure attendees can depart on schedule.
