THEME OF THE KARRI VALLEY MASTERCLASS – AUGUST 2013

“Revealing Your Artistry”.

“The camera always points both ways. In expressing the subject, you also express yourself.” [Freeman Patterson]

Tony Hewitt, Grand Master Photographer, Hon Fellow AIPP and Denis Glennon AO present the first of their 2013 Masterclass Series. To view some of Tony’s work click: Tony Hewitt.

The theme for this Masterclass is in keeping with earlier Masterclasses themes – “The Quiet Mind”, “The Artist’s Eye”, “Finding The Light”, “The Hidden Dimension”, etc.).

The presentations and shooting activities over the weekend will compliment the content of the earlier Masterclasses.

We will explore:

  • Why it is that less than 1% of photographs submitted to major competitions are selected for gold awards?
  • The qualities in a photograph that compel your friends and family members (as well as judges) to remember one or two of your images but immediately forget most others.
  • Why the subjects you as a photographer really enjoy shooting invariably represent your very best work.
  • The obvious technical considerations a photograph MUST have, but more importantly the additional quality that compels viewers, friends, editors and judges to take that all-important second look, then remember that image, above all the other images before them.
  • The quality of “artistry” in compelling photographs and how being aware of the creative decisions you make when taking the photograph, will greatly enhance the possibility of you integrating artistry into your  photography.
  • Why composition is the unseen structure that gives strength to the photographic statement you are making and why if it is strong, lyrical and clear, it has the power to move others.
  • Why in compelling compositions, the reader has the distinct impression that nothing can be added to or subtracted from the image and why this sense of completeness, of balance, is a profound key to adding artistry to your photographs.
  • How the art and craft of “seeing” introduces soul and passion into your images, yet, despite the developments introduced in the last 20 years by digital photography, incisive “seeing” has remained unchanged.
  • Some of the creative decisions Tony and Denis considered before they pressed the shutter that led to increased artistry in a number of their award-winning and compelling photographs.
  • Using Live View to assist achieve more compelling photographs.
  • The power of no colour to better savour the forms and textures of portraits, ethereal landscapes and create ancient painting-like images.
  • How best to put the above into practice in several shoots around Karri Valley itself and at nearby scenic locations.
  • How to work towards a final compelling image; most such images do not arrive in the world fully formed!
  • How you can transform some of your good images into compelling ones, through gentle and constructive commentary and assistance.

Venue

The venue is one of Western Australia’s hidden jewels of tranquillity – Karri Valley Resort, Pemberton, Western Australia.

Nestled on the edge of trout-filled Lake Beedelup and surrounded by majestic karri forests, the natural charm of Karri Valley Resort provides the perfect setting for the focus of this Masterclass. Accommodation for all participants has been reserved in the best twin-share Lakeside rooms, which have private balconies overlooking Lake Beedelup. We have selected August because of the greater opportunities at this time of the year of photographing mist conditions on the lake which provide for stunning atmospheric and moody imagery.

Participants (and their spouses/partners/children) wishing to arrive a day early, or linger a day or so longer, may do so. One is reluctant to leave the quietude of Karri Valley and the many photogenic locations nearby and return to the busyness of city life. Why not make it a long weekend?

SPOUSES/PARTNERS/CHILDREN ARE WELCOME TOO

Spouses/partners/children are welcome to join you for the weekend. They do not have to participate in the Masterclass lectures and/or shoots. The additional costs for those attending and not registered for the Masterclass, will be confined to costs for food and drinks consumed by them and any other personal purchases from the resort.

Accommodation is either on a double occupancy/shared basis in the Lakeside Rooms or in seperate bedrooms in the 2 or 3 bedroom chalets located in the forest setting above the main reception area. The cost is the same for both options.

Photographers living adjacent to Karri Valley who wish to participate in the Masterclass lectures and photo shoots, are welcome. A reduced fee is available for those participants; click the “Costs” tab for details.

Dates & Arrival/Departure Times

The dates are: Fri 9th (for dinner), Sat 10th & Sun 11th August 2013.

We plan to arrive at Karri Valley at around 6.00pm on Friday, in time to ‘settle in’, become acquainted with the geography of the resort, ease into the quietude of the lake and forest surrounds, enjoy dinner after which we will have a short informal discussion about the program for the following two days. More complete details on procedures for arrival, and what to take, will be provided to registrants. We plan to finish around 3.30pm on Sunday, so that participants can avoid driving home in the dark. You can arrange to arrive a day or so early and depart a little later if you wish.
