    Denis,
Now that I’ve been home a bit more than a week, I can begin to process the absolutely extraordinary trip you and Art Wolfe organized to Namibia. It was truly magical; unforgettable in the best sense.

I write to thank you for the extraordinary care you so obviously took in planning and executing the trip — everything was perfect. Your skill and sensitivity as a guide and as a photographer are exemplary and very much appreciated.

You made my experience of this fascinating country deeply moving and I suspect forever memorable.

I will be searching your website for additional journeys with you, which I look forward to with enormous enthusiasm.

This brief note is just by way of saying “thank you.”

I would like to add my word of thanks along with others who attended the Masterclass weekend in Karri Valley.
The location, quietness and the professionalism of the assistance given and classes conducted was second to none.
Things like using live view, even though I was using it, being shown how to use it correctly has made a big difference to picture taking.
This course has made me look at your African photo safaris.
    Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Thanks to Tony and Denis for the inspirational weekend at Karri Valley.
The magic of Denis and Tony really worked well together and I just tried to absorb as much as I could from these great photographers.
I learned heaps about planning a photo and what I try to capture and try to have the photo show what I felt.
The weather was great for photography and the damp and rugged conditions helped put feelings into my photos.
Thanks again for a truly fantastic weekend.
Margaret and I were inspired by Tony’s expertise with Photoshop and Denis with his cube way of “seeing” and composing a photo.

    Dear Denis & Tony,
Thank you so much for an inspiration weekend at Karri Valley.
I was impressed with the way you incorporated learning for all levels from the beginner to the expert.
Both of you continually made yourselves available and nothing was too much trouble.
As a beginner in a Masterclass I felt included in a group of stimlulating people sharing the same passion.
The weekend was enhanced by having your wives Una and Lynette join us.
The location, accommodation and meals all added to a great weekend.
I am amazed at how much I learnt and would recommend one of your Masterlasses to all photographers.

What a memorable and fun time spent with Denis Glennon and Tony Hewitt on their Masterclass weekend in Karri Valley.
Despite bad weather we managed to take a lot of different pictures at numerous locations, learnt more about the thought process, creative inspiration that goes with producing a powerful image and also met a lot of like-minded people who share the same passion.
I personally also found out about Live View on my camera which I hopefully can use to compose some award winning images.
Thanks very much Denis and Tony for answering all the technical and creative questions that were thrown in your direction, you certainly both impressed me with your willingness to share your vast knowledge and expertise with all of us.
I will certainly recommend future Masterclass trips to other fellow photographers.
Thanks once again for an exceptional weekend and of course the great company.
    Regards,
    Bridgette

    Dear Denis and Una,
Ross and I would like to thank you very much for a wonderful Masterclass at Karri Valley.
Your gentle ways and expert sharing of knowledge, images and experiences has left us feeling very enriched, uplifted and empowered to be better photographers and better people.
Things we did, learned, thought, saw and felt will stay with us for a very long time indeed. (Including the Windy Harbour/Salmon Beach expedition and the dinners!)
Some of your images are still resonating in my mind. We felt challenged…and we learned a lot!
It was an honour to be in the company of such wonderful photographers with such generous spirits in the magnificent forests of Karri Valley. Altogether, a tremendous experience.
Thank you again. We feel very lucky!
Warm regards and best wishes for your next adventure.
Please take good care…’til we meet again.

    Hi Denis and Tony
What a fantastic weekend of learning, fun and fellowship, just what photography should be.
It is always great to spend time with like-minded people and the whole group interacted well over the weekend brought together by both Tony and Denis also Una and Lynette.
The “Revealing your Artistry” Masterclass did just that, with Tony ever the creative and Denis the practical it is a great combination with something for everyone and time to assist all from basic to advanced photographers,
If you are even half considering one of the Iconic Images Masterclasses, don’t hesitate.
You will be more than satisfied with the result.
    Regards
    Ric McDonald

    G’day Denis and Tony,

Well, I’ve been sitting here thinking about what I could say about the Masterclass at Karri Valley for quite awhile mainly because there was so much to like about it.
From the absolutely fantastic setting of the Resort, the food, the wine and the excellent service by Resort staff; to the variety of beautiful scenes to photograph.
The excellent discussions involving like minded people through to the awesome presentations facilitated by Tony and Denis.
I think though that the highlight (the Hero Shot) for me was being privilaged to simply hang out with two Photographers, two Gentlemen who, although may be different in their approach, have a deep passion for the art and so obviously enjoy sharing their passion and wisdom.
Thanks to all who attended for a great weekend.
I highly recommended this Masterclass or anything that Denis and Tony are involved in.

    Regards

    Pete

    Hi Denis and Tony,
Thanks for the Masterclass at Karri Valley Resort.
We were taken to some beautiful and interesting locations for the shoots.
Tony’s sessions were inspiring (really!) and Denis’s session on the second day about composition was particularly good, teaching about the ‘art of composition’ like i have never heard before.
    Thanks to you both!
    Ben

    Denis and Tony,
I congratulate you on the fabulous Karri Valley Master Class you ran 9-11th August 2013.
I am sure everybody, from the experienced professional to the beginner enthusiast, came away from the weekend with something special.
I know every image I take in future will have me thinking ‘Okay, what is it about this scene that compels me to photograph it, what is my story, what is the hero I want to highlight, and how can I translate what I am feeling into my image’?
And this is all before I even press that shutter.
Your willingness to share your knowledge and personal experiences in such a sensitive and compelling manner and your ‘hands on’ assistance has certainly enthused and inspired me to release my ‘inner artist’.
And on top of all that it was a fun weekend!
Thank you so very very much.

    Hello Denis and Tony,
Your Masterclass Weekend was so inspirational, educational and with the added bonus of mixing with like-minded people and making new friends.
We so enjoyed the comradery and generosity of each and every attendee to share their knowledge and experience.
Denis and Tony you are such a joy to be with and impart knowledge to others in a very clear and at times humorous way.
I would recommend your masterclass to any photographer.
    Thank you so much.

    Denis & Tony,
A fantastic Masterclass at Karri Valley last weekend (August 2013).
Your different but complementary styles offered something for everyone, from beginner to professional photographer.
Your incredible knowledge, generosity with time, and willingness to impart information with endless patience and tact, topped off with a touch of humour, meant that everyone took away more than just minimal new information, whether it be in relation to seeing the shot, technical considerations or advice about equipment.
Despite the inclement weather – torrential rain and a howling gale, there always was an image to be found.
And, I learned that a bit of rain on the camera is not a show-stopper – visualize Tony heading off into the storm for that one last shot.
    Thank you so much.
I would do it all again, even with the storms.

    Dear Denis and Tony,
Thank you both so much for a fabulous weekend of learning on Rottnest Island.
What a location and what fantastic weather for photography.
You couldn’t have ordered better rainbows, sunrise or sunsets….great connections!
I have come away from the weekend armed with lots of valuable information and inspiration from your amazing photography.
Your assistance and quiet encouragement was much appreciated and I now find myself looking for the light every day!
I look forward to putting all that I have learnt into practice and one day joining you again for another wonderful masterclass.
Thank you for introducing me to what is possible.
    Kind regards
    Wendy Janssen

    Hello Denis & Tony
The Rottnest weekend is the event that will stay with me. Weather gods were with us provided outstanding sunrise/sunsets.
    Overall organisation was excellent.
I think it will be some time before I can distill the elements shown to me.
Slide shows and shots shown by Tony and Denis gave an insight into what is indeed possible.
So much so I felt overawed
That’s what I need to work on, but where to start.
    Kind Regards
    Roger Coyne

    Hi Denis and Tony,
A sincere thank you for a most enjoyable and constructive Masterclass over the weekend.
The amount of knowledge and practical demonstrations presented was staggering.
All delivered with good humour and in a way even the most basic photographer could grasp.
Not to say this Masterclass was for beginners.
No, it can cater for any photographer at any stage of their craft, even professional photographers.
Both Denis and Tony were always close at hand to answer our questions and give advice.
It really was a joy to see many great examples of fine art photography.
To hear the story behind the images made it an even more rewarding experience.
Of particular interest to me was how to “find the light”.
I found the practical demonstrations well presented and informative.
When shooting out in the field, under difficult weather conditions, our hosts proved that there are photo opportunities everywhere, and that we just needed to slow down and take in our surroundings to see our opportunities.
The Rottnest Island Country Club provided a casual and relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy the workshops and presentations.
I have taken much away to think about and apply to my photography.
Would I recommend this Masterclass to others? Definitely!!
    Thank you.
    Regards
    Mark Ward

    Denis,
Many thanks to you and Tony for a wonderful weekend.
As a true amateur I gained so much knowledge from both of you and also from everyone else on the course – I can’t wait to get out and put all of it into practise.
I will be taking my time from now on, watching for that great light and also looking at things around me with a new eye.
Everything ran so perfectly smoothly on Rottnest, I know that can only be because of the organising that went on before the event.
Whoever put in a request for the rainbows and wonderful sunsets and sunrises… well done, and all this on such a rainy weekend.
I also appreciated your emails and the pdf’s you sent to me so quickly after the course.
It has been a pleasure to meet you both and to have you explain your work to me so clearly.
    Thank you.

    Dear Denis & Tony,
Thank you for a fantastic and rewarding Masterclass on Rottnest this weekend.
The brilliant thing about finding the light this weekend, was that it was seemingly obvious, once the knowledge was imparted. And this, during winter!!
The sun barely shone the whole weekend!
So, thank you for showing us how to “find the light”.
The effort and organisation that would have gone into making this weekend happen is very much appreciated.
I thank you both for giving your time and energy to us the whole weekend.
I look forward to putting my new found skills and knowledge to work.
I also look forward to the countless winter days where I will head out into the world in order to find that photogenic light!
    Thank you both.
    Regards,
    Carol.

    Hello Denis & Tony
A sincere thanks to you both for organising such an excellent weekend.
There has obviously been a lot of work & thought put into organising the weekend with respect to accommodation, meals, transport and of course the Masterclass itself. This excellence was very evident throughout the whole weekend.
What we learn and takeaway from the weekend is of course important and without any doubt the investment in time was well worth it many times over. The Masterclass has significantly enhanced my ability to see and take much better photos and set my goals and ambitions to a completely new level.
I already have “permission” to do another course and I will be looking forward to this, knowing that it will yet again significantly improve my skills.
Again, many thanks for the weekend and my very best wishes to yourselves, Una & Lynette.
    Kindest Regards
    David Campbell

Teaching or learning composition is not an easy task!
Over the years, I myself have struggled with some of the concepts and have seen others struggle to come to terms with the concept of “good composition”.
I have seen members at camera clubs become supremely defensive when a judge or a mentor provides them with feedback and critique.
Like in most of the other ares of life, good composition in a way is about making hard decisions.
Consciously or unconsciously a photographer makes a decision to include or not include part of a scene in a photograph – to record or not to record a certain image.
While in the process of making these images and conscious & unconscious decisions, most of the photographers make strong emotional attachments to their images without realizing that they are doing it.
Most of the self-evaluations we do about our images, in my opinion, are based on the strength of these emotional attachments rather than the real artistic merit of the images themselves.
This, I think is true for the majority of beginners and intermediate photographers and perhaps even pros! If you don’t believe me, hang around your local camera club after the judging session of a monthly competition!
So what makes a good composition a good composition? A fine art image a fine art image?
What makes a well-composed fine art image different from an image captured to record a memory, an event in history or a fun moment?
I think Mr. Art Wolfe answers these questions very eloquently during his workshop, which in reality was more like a series of lectures – but a really worthwhile series of lectures.
Art starts his main presentation by drawing inspiration from great painters of the past.
He takes the listener through various historical periods of art while pointing out the lessons one can draw from the great masters.
As a person who firmly believes that the artists of the Renaissance period understood light better than most modern-day photographers, I kept on listening to this part of his lecture with utmost fascination.
Art then shrewdly and mathematically deconstructs the rules of composition and presents the listener with a set of well laid out guidelines while showing examples from the great body of work he had created over the years.
He talks about balance, lines, gestures, motion and rhythm as parts of composition and convincingly makes a set of arguments to drive each of his points home.
During this presentation he tells us how he developed this ‘new way’ of thinking and approach over the recent years, and shows us the gradual evolution of his mind and thinking.
He shows us how a person can continue to evolve and learn even after achieving things most others can only dream of.
By the end of his presentation, Art very unkindly takes most of the excuses away from people by ruthlessly dissecting the concept of “good composition”, and teaches the listener even a ‘subjective’ discipline like art can be scientifically deconstructed, and therefore can be learnt, by training one’s mind to take hard decisions!
Thank you Art Wolfe for taking a departure from the standard workshop model to give people a fresh perspective, and thank you Denis for bring Art to Perth!

    Hi Denis,
I would just like to thank you for bringing Art Wolfe to Perth last weekend.
I spent the entire day enraptured by what he had to say about his philosophy of life and photography and how the two tie together.
I was sorry when it ended, I could have gone on listening to more and more.
I found Art to be a gentleman and a very entertaining speaker, the whole day was truly inspiring.
    Regards,
    Adam.

    Dear Denis
Thank you so much for organising Art Wolfe’s tour in Australia. I attended the all day workshop in Perth and was just so inspired. He is an exceptional communicator and has clearly been shooting with teaching in mind for many years. I feel very privileged to have been able to benefit from his knowledge. Excellent value for money. Thanks again.
    Regards,

    Denis,
Thank you for your efforts in bringing Art Wolfe to Perth and indeed Australia. He was both thoroughly informative and inspirational, while generously sharing his life journey and the philosophies that have guided him on his many photographic sojourns across the planet and across time. Not only were we treated to Art the photographer and artist, but we saw a glimpse of Art the man. An incredible experience for those priveledged to be present, thank you to you both!
    Regards,
    Tony.

    Hello Denis

Thank you for bringing such a wonderful talent, in Art Wolfe, to Perth. It is always good to see great images but to understand the life journey the photographer has made and to start to see the world through his eyes at where he is now, is what is truly inspirational.
    Regards,
    Robert.

    Dear Denis, Iconic Images, Art,
Many thanks for bringing Art Wolfe to Australia.
His Perth one-day seminar was certainly inspiring.
Hearing how Art derives his images from the concepts of many different artists and styles of art was eye opening and really made me consider my own work and its influences – something I hadn’t investigated before.
His willingness to share stories and photography methods was generous to say the least.
I can see how he is not only a skilled photographer but a kind and generous man, whose attitudes to life, art, people, nature and the environment shine through in his majestic images.
Seeing the world through Arts eyes and hearing his words was a privilege.
    Regards,
    Alex.

    Denis,
I attended Art Wolfe’s photographic workshop in Sydney. I’ve known and followed him as a wildlife photographer, but I’ve discovered that he is much, much more. He’s an artist (painter) in his own right and has studied art. His artistic background influences and inspires his photographic work. He has created beautiful, beautiful images and he shows them side by side to artworks by Miro, Manet, Cezanne, Picasso, Turner, Jackson Pollock and more. He talked about positive and negative space, perception, design, how one builds and finds a picture, experimenting and following one’s passion. And he hardly uses flash. His workshop was a genuine treat.
    Regards,
    Jack

    Hi Denis
I just wanted to say thank you for bringing Art Wolfe to Australia to share his philosophy, knowledge and experience with us.
I came away from the day totally inspired and with a whole new view on where my photography could go.
An interesting observation I made when debriefing with my wife last night (the workshop was a Xmas and Birthday gift of immense delight) was the ease with which Art was able to weave art history into his workshop.
With a scientific background devoid of art education I was completely hooked by the way in which Art explained art history and then interwove his photographic portfolio.
I will explore this aspect of art/photography further as I seek to develop my own photographic style.
I am relatively new to digital photography and have been pushing myself on a steep learning curve.
Art Wolfe has just projected my knowledge and understanding well ahead of where I expected to be and I will spend the rest of this year practising and practising the principles he espoused.
I now have a direction I was lacking and will be forever grateful for yesterday’s experience.
I will be saving and saving so I can join you or Art or Gavriel on one of the amazing workshops keep reading about in the publications and on the websites.
I have been quite emotional today and have been very moved by Art’s workshop.
Thank you again. Please use any comments I have made, that you feel valuable, on your website as an endorsement of the day.
    Regards,
    Neil.

    Denis,
I thoroughly enjoyed Art Wolfe’s lecture on Friday night.
    Amazing images and great stories.
I have a whole lot of fresh inspiration for travel photography.
    Regards,

    Hi, Denis
I just wanted to say thanks for all your hard work to coordinate and promote the Art Wolfe’s visit and arrange the fantastic workshop last weekend in Melbourne.
Art was extremely generous in sharing his knowledge and experience, and while I’m sure he’s answered questions like ours a hundred times, I found his thoughtful responses honest and practical.
The sessions were particularly inspiring and I am already looking at things differently through my view finder.
    Regards,
    Stuart.

  32. Glen March 26, 2012 at 7:05 am #

    Denis,
Thank you for organising Art Wolfe’s tour.
Both the lecture and the workshop in Sydney were fantasic, very informative and entertaining, an amazing opportunitity to learn from and about Art Wolfe. I left the weekend with the inspiration and knowledge to push my photography to a new level, and to experiment in different directions.
Thanks again Denis, Art and everyone else involved.
    Best Regards,
    Glen.

  33. Jen Fawkes March 25, 2012 at 5:47 pm #

    Denis,
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to meet and hear Art Wolfe speak.
Initially for us it was a real trip down memory lane, with images of Tibet/ Nepal back in the 1980’s.
But then we were blown away with Art’s images of wildlife (the Bengal tiger was amazing) and his current creative work.
I have always been lead to believe that at some point in everyone’s journey we either need to recreate ourselves, or recreate what we do.
Art has done that with his current work, and his passion for art photography has me gasping and so inspired.
    Regards,
    Jen.

  34. Phil Wright March 25, 2012 at 5:28 pm #

    Denis,
Thank youfor putti ng on a magnificent event in Melbourne yesterday.
Art’s work is exemplary but he speaks about it with humility and humour.
I found the day very inspiring and instructive.
I especially thought the morning session was valuable, on how Art finds inspiration in various art forms.
The illustrations that accompanied the lectures were stunning.
It provided a salient lesson to always observe and be receptive to different things.
I wish Art well with his bodyscapes project and very much admire that he is trying something which, although it fits with what he’s done in the past in one sense, is somewhat of a departure from what he’s known for.
I know it will bring him further success and a new audience.
    Regards,
    Phil

    Hi Denis,
Thank you so much for bringing Art Wolfe to Australia.
I brought my wife with me to Art’s seminar on Friday evening, and to the workshop on Saturday, and we enjoyed both sessions immensley.
Art’s ability to show his life in photography on Friday night in photos and stories was enjoyable, whilst the Saturday workshop was also enjoyable, inspirational, and entertaining.
The photos and the stories behind them were instructional, and the abilty to question Art on all aspects of his life and work was rewarding.
I got home last night and immediately ordered the DVD series “Travels to the Edge”, and whilst I already have 2 of Art’s books, will be looking to order others.
Again, thank you so much for bringing Art to Australia, and for introducing Gavriel Jucan to us. His own work is brilliant as well.
    Regards,
    Graham.

  36. Glenn Dixon March 25, 2012 at 10:59 am #

    Denis,
It’s an understatement to say that I have just had my mind blown apart.
I had to wait until this morning to pick up the pieces and write this review.
Thanks so much Denis, Art and Gavriel for your willingness to share such interesting insights and observations from all over our vast planet.
You were spot on in stating during the introduction, “Don’t be surprised if you are viewing in quiet, respectful awe.”
Couldn’t recommend the seminar any higher.
    Regards,
    Glenn.

    Denis,
Thank you so much for bringing Art to Australia.
It was fantastic to be able to have him and Gavriel in our backyard.
Art is a legend and to be able to discuss the way he approaches his photography was truly inspiring.again I want to thank you for bringing Art to Australia, it was wonderful to be able to spend time with everybody in Hamilton Island.
I saw the GBR photos on Art’s blog, so very pleased that sunny Queensland finally lived up to its name before you left the Whitsundays.
    Best Regards,
    Andre.

  38. Tess Parker March 25, 2012 at 7:26 am #

    Denis,
Generously sharing the story of his life and the inspiration behind his work, Art Wolfe brilliantly illustrated ways in which every photographer, no matter how technically skilled, can find new ways of looking at the world around them – be it nature, landscapes, people or buildings. He encourages us all to live creatively and see differently, and to engage with empathy with whatever we attempt to capture when we make photographs.
A humble, warm and sensitive man, he is a natural teacher and humorous storyteller, and you will leave these workshops inspired, entertained and uplifted. A
nd you will definitely put “Photographic trip with Art Wolfe” on your wish list for next Xmas.
    Regards,
    Tess

    Denis,
Art’s enthusiasm for his work is inspiring, as is his generosity in sharing what he has learnt over the years.
    A memorable and fun workshop.
Thank you Art and Gavriel and Denis!

    Denis,
A huge thanks for inviting both Art and Gavriel to give our local Australians the chance to meet and learn for one of the photographic world’s most gifted and generous artists.
I attended both sessions and was indeed in rapture with all the “Photographic Gold” that was willingly given and taught.
It was over way too soon and I’m sure I will be digestiing and practicing for months, if not years, the Art, as Art taught.

    Denis,
The Art Wolfe lecture and Seminar were absolutely inspirational. Though not neglecting techniques or equipment the emphasis was on what made impactful and well composed photos that reflcted both the passion and repect for whatever Art photographs.
Told through his personal journey as an artist who understands how we see, his brilliant images opened up new ways for us to see the world differently.
He providd confidence to take images that capture the essence of the subject and to stop, look and find a differnet way to capture even the most cliched images. A humble man who speaks with quiet confidence and conveys the love of what inspires him every day.
    Kind Regards,
    Clive

    Last weekend with Art Wolfe.

    Denis,
Well what an awesome experience. I must say that Friday night’s lecture and Saturday’s seminar with Art Wolfe here in Sydney were exceptional. I mean the man is a legend, and to actually have the opportunity learn from the man, be in the same room and shake his hand, was something special, and something I unreservedly recommend to anyone who considers themselves in any way serious about the art and craft of photography.

Art’s Friday evening lecture was a bit of a retrospective talk, delivered with humour and humility. He is one of the great American photographers of the century, and his ability to inspire and inform from his past held the room in respectful awe for nearly two hours.

Saturday was more of “nuts and bolts” session with something for everyone, from enthusiast to seasoned pro. For those who didn’t attend the Friday session he briefly recapped, before launching into a full day seminar covering everything from sourcing inspiration, the art of “seeing”, and composition. After each section there was question time, and if you so desired, there was opportunity for one-on-one time with the Wolfe man to enjoy some less formal banter.
I found Art infinitely approachable and willing to share whatever insight he may have to offer.
I walked away with some gold this weekend. Some quotes that really resonated with me:

“It’s about finding the photos that most people don’t see.”
“Most people are entertained by the skills of other people.”
“Live your passions and you’ll live a longer, happier life.”
    “Photograph without prejudice.”

Art is still due to speak in Melbourne and Perth. For details and registration information visit http://denisglennon.com/art-wolfe-in-australia-2012/

    Hi Denis and Art
Having worked as a Press Photographer for the last 20 years, I was losing inspiration and motivation for something that is and was my passion. I booked Arts workshop as a spur of the moment thing, I even had doubts about turning up, I would never normally go to something like this. It turned out to be the most inspirational thing I have done. I cannot stop raving about it to my colleagues, I am now shooting more in my free time and loving it.
Art your pictures are amazing, inspiring and I cannot thank you enough for letting us into your world, and Denis for organizing the workshops.
I cannot wait for more and I am now an avid Art Wolfe Fan!!
    Best Regards,
    Danielle.

    Denis and Art!

What a wonderful workshop, very informative and entertaining. I think everyone really enjoyed Art’s engaging presentation style, photos and his openness in sharing his workflow and thought process.
It was fantastic to lift the curtain and see how a concept is built to a final stunning image / series or book.

Highly recommended for those who have a chance to grab a seat!

    Craig.

    Denis,
I feel privileged to have attended the Art Wolfe’s workshop last weekend. Art revealed to us why he is a true Master of Photographic Art as he explained and demonstrated his ideas of composition often drawing on examples of the works of famous Masters. A truly inspirational day!

    Hi Denis,
Thank you very much for organising Art Wolfe’s lecture tour of Australia.
I attended his workshop yesterday and came away inspired and exhilarated, feeling that I now have a fresh way to approach my photography, and that some ideas which others have persuaded me to move away from have now been validated for me.
I came home and went online to buy some of his books and videos.
    Thanks

Spending a whole day with Art Wolfe was a fantastic opportunity. We gained a wonderful insight into Art’s philosophy and image making methods. It was also great to experience the width and breadth of Art’s image making. This day was worth every penny and should not be missed by any serious photographer.

Thank you so much for such an amazing 2 days with Art Wolfe. By far the most inspirational and uplifting lecture series I’ve ever attended, and I have heard a lot of professional photographers speak.

    Hi Denis
Being a passionate photographer for a number of years I booked the Art Wolfe presentation in Sydney on Friday night as well as the workshop on Saturday, I must say having travelled from the Gold Coast just for this event I was not disappointed.
To sit through and listen to what Art has achieved and experienced during his career was informative and exhilarating to say the least.
Art’s ability to hold your undivided attention shows through with his amazing work….. I came away looking at the art of photography in a whole new light!!!!
Thank you all for an amazing experience I will never forget.

    Hi Denis,
My husband and I attended Art Wolfe’s workshop in Sydney today, and want to tell you how incredible it was. Art is a dynamic speaker, and able to convey his knowledge in an interesting, funny and informative manner. I was not bored for one second of the day, and learned a lot. The workshop was worth every penny!
We tried to look for the place to post comments, but didn’t find one. So we’re saying everything we took away from the session here.
Art is an incredible photographer, and it was a pleasure listening to him today.

    Hi Denis & Tony,
I recently had the opportunity to participate in your Karri Valley Masterclass and what an amazing weekend it was!
You work so well together with your different approaches to photography and to presenting workshops and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire weekend.
For someone like myself who has a science background and has participated in many ‘technical’ or ‘how-to’ courses in photography, your Masterclass “The Hidden Dimension” was a refreshing and inspiring change.
Now I’m consciously seeking depth in my photos and unless the photograph I’m taking means something to me or my intended audience I don’t bother taking it.
Tony, I am amazed at how much thought goes into your images to produce a story in one single picture. You are a true artist and storyteller, it was a privilege to learn from you.
Denis, I’m not sure if you are aware of just how powerful your images are. I am an ecotourism guide today because I was inspired by wildlife and nature images I was exposed to as a child.
I’m sure your photos will inspire a whole new generation of conservationists and wildlife-lovers as well as help educate everyone about this wonderful planet we all share. Please don’t ever stop taking photographs – the world can never have too many of your images.
Thank you both for sharing some of your knowledge.
And yes, I now shoot in RAW and expose to the right. I hope to see you at the next Masterclass.
    Regards
    Wendy Eiby

    Hi Denis and Tony,
What a wonderful and inspiring weekend at Karri Valley!
Its so nice to see two very accomplished photographers imparting so much of their knowledge to others.
I feel I’ve learnt so much from the both of you not only technically but visually.
The content you provided on adding emotion and depth to images was invaluable and I feel like I can see and communicate things I couldn’t necessarily see or do before.
The location was fantastic, the lake was stunning in the morning and it was so interesting to see the difference in my photos from the first morning compared to the second morning after applying what i’d learnt from the previous day.
I’ll definitely be signing up for the next one!
In terms of ideas for your next workshop I think somewhere close to Perth would be ideal for those who only have a weekend to spare, perhaps Margaret River.
    Thanks again,
    Dayna

  60. Adrian Tulett September 18, 2011 at 4:23 pm #

    Dear Denis & Tony,
Thanks for an excellent weekend of fun and learning at Karri Valley.
I felt it was a great experience both ‘on location’ and in your ‘teaching sessions’ back at the resort. I have come away from the weekend with so much more knowledge and will hopefully have opportunity to put it into practice soon.
As I drove home, I found myself wanting to stop about a thousand times to explore numerous photo opportunities, but unfortunately time was against me.
As far as locations for future masterclasses, what about in our ‘own backyard’ so to speak.
The Perth Hills, both the Swan and Avon Valleys or even in and around Fremantle come to my mind as possible locations.
Wherever the location, I will certainly be doing my best to attend other masterclasses in future.
    Regards,
    Adrian

    Denis & Tony,
Thanks again for an excellent Masterclass. You two pair up very well, and together managed to cover the selected topics from two different but very complimentary angles.
The direction of the workshop was very well chosen, and I was especially impressed with the way you managed to present a meaningful weekend to a very wide set of skill levels.
The importance of your approach to adult education was not lost on any of us.
The ‘a little too early’ shoots (6 am and me do not get on well) (and the evening ones) were also a well chosen way of getting some of one on one time and addressing our individual photographic needs.
Congratulations to you guys…and lucky us!
    Regards,
    Steve.

    Hi Denis
Many thanks for a fabulous weekend at the Karri Valley Masterclass!
I enjoyed all aspects of the workshops and photographic sessions! As well, I think you and Tony Hewitt make a wonderful team with some same, some different and many complimentary skills.
I learned some new things and was reminded of many other things I know but forget or loose sight of when behind the lens!!
The setting was lovely and food excellent!
Please ensure to keep me posted on any new/further Masterclass weekends you have scheduled for this year – which I doubt – but I will be keen to participate in those coming up next year for sure!
You are both skilled photographers and good communicators – and with my teaching background that is a real bonus!
Once again it was delightful to get to know you and Tony and soak up both of your photographic wisdom and expertise!
Also loved viewing and becoming more familiar with both of your impressive work!!!
Looking forward to the next one!

  63. Georgie Kelly September 13, 2011 at 2:19 pm #

    Denis & Tony,
Thank you so much, the Karri Valley Masterclass week-end was fantastic!
The whole thing was a real ‘shot in the arm’ for me, a boost to get me onto the next level. There were lots of nuggets and I’ve added these to my notes of the practical information and ideas you provided during the workshop forums.
I have brought home at least one shot that I feel is a real ‘WOW shot’ for me. I believe you ensured everyone has, or had help to get THAT one shot – that was a key success factor for people!
The weather, accommodation, food, environment, people, camaraderie was fantastic. Your instruction, help, support and advice was also terrific.
I really liked the dawn session on Sunday explaining the light, angles across the lake with the fog, composition etc, … then the portrait instruction – so easily and naturally executed – a great confidence booster when a couple of my shots taken behind Tony turned out trumps, largely due to the light, positioning and instruction on the subject.
The Saturday night exercise of people introducing someone else’s photograph was fun and enlightening, as was Tony’s gentle ‘critique’ of images. For me, it helped me see why I really liked a photograph, but there was something missing …. now I know what it is. Great learnings.
Seeing both your slideshows with your magnificent images was inspiring. Both of you are so talented – it stimulated me to want to do better.
You asked for other ideas of where to run a workshop. What about Broome, timing it for the stairway to the moon would be wonderful to include, along with other great opportunities up there?
One last thing – I’d like to see an agenda/program for future workshops to be prepared for what’s coming up and when (understood it’s also nice to play things by ear, depending on weather, mood, preferences etc). A couple of others expressed same.
I look forward to having more learnings opportunities with you both.
    Thanks again.
    Georgie.

  64. David Cowley August 25, 2011 at 10:17 pm #

    Hi Denis & Shem
I was just so ready for almost everything you had to say, having just got back from South/Eastern Africa and game drives in the Madikwe Game Reserve, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Kirawira Hills section of the Serengeti. I felt I wasn’t getting the photographic results I wanted during those game drives, and heaven forbid, got out the camera manual to try to work out what I should try to change. I twigged on to a couple of “improvements”, but I could have done much better with the benefit of the “rules of thumb” you introduced in a space of less than 15 minutes!
I was particularly interested in Shem’s approach to gear, as I had decided to keep to the smallest/lightest possible Canon travelling combo for handling everything from people, buildings, landscapes, flowers and wild-life. I was delighted to see that Shem can make
that work – so I am sure I can too.
Having shot 700Gb of photos while travelling since I picked up my Canon DSLR in May 2010, I am now seeking to put more vision into
my photography – again, Shem’s story helped point a path.
Overall, an invaluable experience that has signposted my future direction.
    Thanks.
    Regards
    David.

    Dear Denis and Shem,
    What a fantastic learning experience!
I particularly liked the limited discussion of the technical aspects of photography – the amount provided was just enough, and very useful.
For me, the open sharing of your passion for wildlife and landscape photography, your insights into the ‘photographers eye’, the goal of getting the best shot without the need for digital image manipulation later and the importance of fieldcraft – knowing your subject to improve the chance of a great image – were most important.
I can’t wait to get back into the bush and put my new knowledge to work!
    Regards,
    Bob.

    Dear Denis and Shem,
I am in awe of some of the photographs that I saw at the ‘Nature and Wildlife Photophaphy’ seminar at the Perth Zoo. The location, catering and facilities provided us with a most enjoyable experience.
Denis and Shem, you work well together and your presentations are complimentary to each other.
As a beginner at photography I now feel enthusiastic and encouraged to “have a go”.
Bob and I look forward to our Afican Safari with you both, & the opportunity to learn more.

    Hi Denis and Shem,

Firstly many thanks for the opportunity to attend the ‘Nature & Wildlife Photography’ seminar, om 20 August. I am a volunteer with Bold Park (running the weeding, bush regeneration and monitoring groups) and when I’m not doing that I walk round Bold Park taking photos to record the birds and flowers. Bold Park is managed by BGPA (King’s Park).

The seminar was insightful, interesting and I learnt a lot of valuable hints and information. The photography was stunning and I found both your stories re the path you had travelled to get to the point your at, very interesting. It reinforced some of the conclusions I had come to just by observing particular species of birds every day.

It was a wonderful day which further fuelled my passion for nature photography.

Once again many thanks for giving me the opportunity to attend.

    Cheers

    Barbara Knott

    Hi Denis,
I am one of the fortunate Rottnest Voluntary Guides who was lucky enough to secure a place at the ‘Nature and Wildlife Photography’ Seminar.
I found all the presentations very informative and inspirational and I just listened spellbound for the day. I really loved it.
Verbalising the transition from film to digital was very helpful. Then our initial response into digital and later, with time and thought, using it creatively to follow our own path and not be locked into rules.
All the photographs were magic and I particularly liked the photos of the osprey. It has really set my mind working and I can’t wait to go to my favourite island and capture my image of this wonderful bird.
Thank you both for sharing your wonderful paths and opening my mind to my own creative ideas.
    Yours sincerely,
    Pam

    Hello Denis and Shem
Just a short not to you and Shem for the fantastic day.
Your information at sorting and setting up a photo was very informative and I have been practicing today at taking photos of the bored horses in the yard next to my house. The water does not sink in very fast here in Jandakot and the reflections of the horses in the still pool is awesome;(bit of a pity with the sheds in the background though:)…
    Thank you both very much.
Luckily I was the winner of 3rd prize and I will take Saul up on his offer to teach me how to actually use the camera my husband bought for me.
Once again, thank you both for your generosity in enabling me to learn so much on Saturday.
The photos you both shared with us were awesome; I can only hope to capture something similar.

    Kaye Greening.

    Dear Denis & Shem,

My sincere thanks & appreciation for the “Nature & wildlife Photography” workshop at Perth Zoo on Saturday.
I have come away more educated & greatly inspired by the talks given by both of you. It’s good to have this renewed enthusiasm as sometimes when you are busy working you get lost in the everyday rat race of life & forget about the real pleasures that are out there.
Africa is definitely on my bucket list….hopefully with both you & Shem!

    Kind Regards,
    Fiona

  71. IAN ROBERTSON August 22, 2011 at 10:20 am #

    Dear Denis and Shem,
Thank you a great seminar on weekend at Perth Zoo.
I have over the past few months been thinking of ‘recording’ images I see versus ‘creating’ images ‘I don’t see’ and your talks validated this process to me.
The only problem I now have is trying to organise TWO trips to Africa – one in the wet and one in the dry!!!
Thanks to Shem for freely giving some personal advice on settings.
Maybe, and only maybe, there may have been a little too much time spent on the history of creating images/inspiration (though needed)… and this is only because I was too eager to hear “all the other great stuff”.
I sat in the passenger seat on the 2 hour return trip home ‘pretending’ I was in Africa taking shots of the wildlife – ibis, pelicans, crows, kite, spoonbills, parrots, horses, cattle – along the highway. It is amazing how much life there was.. as my eyes were now much more ‘open’!!

Hope to catch up in the future – preferably in Africa!

    Yours

    Denis and Shem,
Thank you most sincerely for organising the ‘Nature and Wildlife Photography’ Seminar at the Perth Zoo.
Despite spending 30 days with you both on earlier adventures, I learnt new approaches and new techniques to enhance images and think with more invention.
I found it particularly helpful to see Shem’s photographic journey over a decade and hear of his changing ideas, and was inspired by the glorious images you both presented which so well illustrate conservation photography.
    It was a great day!

    Great presentations yesterday.
I found it rewarding not only in the technical aspects of safari photography but also in the the discussion on the creative process.

    Hi Denis and Shem
Thank you for a great day. I thoroughly enjoyed the wildlife photography workshop yesterday. It was most inspirational and hopefully will make me think outside the box when taking photos. It is hard to find something that could be improved on except perhaps photographing in the zoo. I am aware of the restrictions the zoo has on commercial photography but I am sure we could all sign something to say we would not use the images commercially. Just a thought. Thanks again Helen

    Denis,
The Nature and Wildlife Seminar at Perth Zoo was a really great day for me. All the talks were great, and there was much that I learned from the “masters” who spoke, not just on technique but the practice and philosophy of capturing images and the photographic art.
But most of all it was inspirational. Any seminar that makes me want to rush out with a camera to start applying the content to the real world of image capture is a wonder.
And that’s just how I felt.
Thanks for the great organisation and finding such a great speaker in Shem.
    Steve

    Denis,

Your seminar with Shem Compion yesterday was a very good balance of inspiration, technique and knowing what to expect from an African safari (which I am yet to experience). As you both pointed out, growing our skills is one thing, but growing our vision and creativity is what progresses us from good to iconic images. I am inspired to take more time out to plan and seek and, as you say, gather …. without fear of making mistakes.
    Cheers,
    Mike

    Dear Denis,
Thank you very much for the all day photographic seminar today at the Perth Zoo. I was amazed at the depth of knowledge both you and Shem Compion provided to us all. The method of presentation was easy to follow and I have left with a wealth of photographic tips and hints which I am sure will substantially improve my photography for a long time to come. I have been to a range of courses and to a number of lectures and seminars but your’s is by far the best value for money I have come across.

Thank you for a very professional presentation. I look forward to the tips from both Shem and yourself that will enhance my photography for years to come.

    Dear Denis & Tony,
Thank you so much for a great weekend in Rottnest. Having been with you in New Norcia in April, I knew the organisation would be flawless and I wondered whether the inspirational content would be up to the same standard. It was! You both encourage the search for art in photography and the inclusion of Aurelie was fantastic. Being winter, the timing of the dawn shoots was very manageable, and the light and cloud effects were great.

Since returning I’ve even managed to achieve a couple of reasonable panoramas. I look forward to hearing what challenges you will have in store for us at the next Masterclass!

I cannot thank you enough for your efforts in organising the truly inspirational Rottnest Masterclass last weekend. Your impeccable balance of technical advice and compositional guidance opened my eyes to new ways of seeing, and the perspective and insight to the ‘Artists Eye’ provided by Aurelie was simply incredible.

It was a privilege for me to spend the weekend with so many talented photographers and artists and I look forward to hearing about future events.

    Regards,

    Iain Norrish

    Dear Denis & Tony,
What a wonderful opportunity you provided for those of us battling with the day-to-day organising and running of a photographic studio, to get away and actually enjoy what started it all – photography. I would like to compliment you on your very balanced mix of the technical and the inspirational. Too often we get mixed up with just the technical. Aurelie was an inspiration in her own right, both by her presence and her lovely soft personality. She gave us a different vision. Often we can feel a little isolated in our own little worlds and forget that there are others trying to find answers to the same questions we are. Thank you for making the effort to allow us to mix with other like-minded people who are trying to improve their view of a complex world.
Without the input of yourselves and Aurelie I would not have been able to achieve the right mindset for my Eureka moment and for that I thank you.
Please keep me informed as to your plans for future inspirational events.
    Regards,
    Vic Miller

    Dear Denis & Tony

As an “elementary level photographer” I felt sheepish about attending your Rottnest Masterclass. To my relief, I was at ease throughout the weekend while still being in awe of the images being captured and developed around me. What a lesson in learning how to see! And what a privilege to spend time and share experiences with real master photographers and artists.

Thanks for your efforts, organisation and generosity throughout the weekend. It was a great experience. I particularly appreciated the freedom to learn and experiment in my way, at my pace, while drawing inspiration and advice from the two of you, Aurelie and the others on the course.

    Thanks
    Colin…..the $50 camera man

    Hi Denis and Nick,

Thanks for an informative session on digital printing.

I run my own 3D visualization and Photography business and will benefit from the session.

Look forward to other sessions where Adobe lightroom functions are touched upon.

    Regards,

    David Liao

Thank you for an amazing Printing Seminar in Melbourne; keeping the complexity and making it accessible.
    A GREAT FEAT!

    Hi Denis and Tony,
I enjoyed the opportunity to learn from you again, this time in the peaceful setting of New Norcia.
It is always so enlightening to watch creativity at work and to have very focused time to put into practice what I have learnt.
Dom Michael’s opening talk was just superb and certainly got us all in the ‘zone’.
Thanks for a well organised and very different experience that was the New Norcia Masterclass.
    Regards
    Catherine Matthys

    Hello Denis & Tony,
Time has flown since the New Norcia Masterclass but I still find myself thinking a lot on what I experienced and learned through the weekend.
I enjoyed the pace of the weekend’s activities and the opportunities to learn through absorption.
The discussions were very topical and I found myself seeing more through the viewfinder and attempting to engage a quieter, if not fully “quiet” mind.
The choice of venue was inspired, as was the mixing of photography with philosophy, through the opportunity to engage with representatives from the Abbey.
The weekend was made more rewarding by sharing it with a great group of people.
The weekend has inspired me to get out more and photograph and focus more on the creative side.
Thank you, sincerely, for your efforts and gentle guidance.
    Best Regards
    Scott Langtry

    Hello Denis & Tony,
Thank you both for another wonderfully well organized and thought provoking weekend of fabulous photography!
New Norcia is steeped in the history of Western Australia and the architecture reflects that admirably.
You excelled yourselves by providing access to Dom Michael with his most erudite discussion about “The Quiet Mind ‘ and its value in photography -and Life itself!
The significant art collection of the monks was also well summarized by the humorous yet humble Dom Chris with his 30 year experience of the monastery.
Combine this with a detailed analysis of High Dynamic Range by Denis, and the walk-and-talk of Tony; we all tried hard to produce better images of the wonder-filled interiors of the churches we were shown.
Fortuitously[..or not? ] we were present during a near-full moon which provided special shooting opportunities.
What will you do for the next Masterclass??…bring it on!
    Peter.

Hi Denis, the New Norcia Masterclass was an event not to be missed. Blending such a potent environment with your talents was truly inspirational. Thank you for your patience, and generosity of time over the weekend. My confidence has soared and it shows in my photography. I will be seeing you at the next Masterclass.

  92. Brenda January 27, 2011 at 5:46 pm #

    Hi Denis
Just wanted to thank you, your team and Nick for the Printing Masterclass. Prior to the class I was wondering if the content would be beyond me, but everyone explained everything so well that I understood everything and was extremely happy with the content. Would definitely attend another workshop. Thank you. Brenda

  93. Yvonne January 26, 2011 at 7:42 am #

Thank you for yesterday’s Printing Masterclass. I am one of those photographers that has not invested in a printer as yet as it was like “too hard to go there”. So yes all my images are on the hard drives and basically I am the only one that views them. Well that is all about to change now as I am armed with the information I need to take the plunge into printing and will even have the confidence to outsource for larger prints.
I am not a technical sort but Nick made it possible to see through the technical jungle and helped me understand what I need to do.
Thanks again Nick, I hope to see you out our way again soon.
Thanks also to Denis for organizing this workshop, Denis instinctively knows what his fellow photographers need and organises it for us.
    Cheers
    Yvonne.

    Denis and Tony,
Thank you both for an exciting and inspiring Rottnest Island Masterclass.
Good logistics and a great venue complemented the unique experience [for me ] of walking with a Master Photographer and listening to the thought processes as images were entertained mentally prior to committing to the click.
I also found it very valuable to literally watch over the shoulder and see post-production manipulation of the image as the vision was transformed into reality.
Thank you for helping me “see”!

  95. Tony Hewitt November 12, 2010 at 1:05 am #

To all those who attended the Rottnest Masterclass, thankyou. It was a pleasure to share the passion and adventure that I find in capturing images. Each of you bought a unique energy to the weekend, the consequence of which, was a wonderful group of like minded souls discovering new ways of ‘seeing’. I personally enjoyed the opportunity to share my vision and forge new friendships, while also building on some existing ones. I look forward to sharing the photographic journey in the future.
    Tony

    To Tony and Denis
The Rottnest Masterclass was sublime! From the location to the technical and coaching taking place one could only walk away that bit of a better photographer, enthused and inspired. My only complaint was that the days were far too short! Thank you for the well organised, well run inspirational class.

Thank you Tony and Denis for a very memorable and inspiring weekend at Rottnest. I loved every minute!

    Dear Denis and Tony,
The Rottnest Weekend was absolutely fabulous. Everyone who attended loved it. I never thought I would get up at 4am two mornings in a row without complaining! Thanks to you both for being so generous with your time and skills. The weekend has helped me greatly and I feel very inspired to try lots of new ideas.
Can’t wait for the next one!

    Warm Regards

    Dear Denis and Tony,
Thank you both for a fantastic weekend in Rottnest. For a first timer to Rottnest, you certainly showed me the beauty of the island and opened my senses to the little things around me that I would normally walk past.
Denis, your organisational skills are impeccable as usual and Tony, thank you for your generosity in imparting your knowledge and skills in turning our images into works of art.
Meeting a great group of people and making some new friends was a bonus!
    Thanks again,
    Denise

  100. Jeff Grant November 10, 2010 at 6:42 am #

    Dear Denis and Tony,

Many thanks for an unforgettable weekend, the organisation and location were both flawless. The group was better than one could reasonably expect, and the pace perfect.

Tony inspired me with his easy, enthusiastic style. He opened my eyes to possibilities that I had not seen before, and left me keen to explore new areas in my own work. I particularly enjoyed the analysis of Tony’s prints, and the explanation of the process of turning an image from photo to fine art.

Thanks again to both of you for a very special masterclass.

    Cheers,

    Jeff

    Dear Denis & Tony,
Thank you both for the thought & care you both put into the Rottnest Masterclass. You were both so generous with your expertise and experience.
I enjoyed the weekend more than I can say. What a priviledge to spend it with such a lovely group of people.
I have come away from the weekend with feelings of confidence and inspiration.
    Again, my thanks.
I intend to repeat the class next year if you decide to run it again.
    Kindest Regards,
    Shevaun Buschenhofen.

    Denis,
Sincer congratulations on winning the “Wilderness” category in ANZANG 2010; what a beautifully crafted and moving image.
    A well deserved honour.

  104. Denis Glennon September 24, 2010 at 7:48 pm #

    Dear All,
This short email is simply to say “Thank you sincerely” for undertaking your holiday/photo safari to Kenya with me.

As it was a first photo safari to Kenya for Denis Glennon Photography/Iconic Images, a great deal of research and planning was undertaken prior to selecting the destination, the on-ground handler and the individual camps/lodges.

I trust this pre-departure work and the on-ground services provided for each and every participant (i) a memorable holiday and (ii) a hard-drive full of iconic images.

The group worked extremely well together and I thank you individually for the generous manner in which you cooperated with the busy schedule and the intermingling of photographers in the various vehicles.
Best wishes with the enjoyable task of culling and selecting many iconic images over the next few weeks (or months).

As soon as I have a suitable venue and date confirmed for the “Get-Together Night” I will let you know; as discussed in Kenya, I am targeting the first week in November.

I will keep you informed of new photo safaris and if you have any thoughts on how I might enhance future ones, please do let me know.

Once again, thank you for your support.

    Warm Regards and Straight Horizons,

    Denis Glennon AO

    Denis,
The wildlife images on your website are stunning and inspirational. Are you organizing a photo safari to Africa in 2011? If yes, I would like to join you. How do you capture the amazing shots of the whales? You should write an article on what you call ‘Conservation Photography’ as many photographers in Australia would be interested to read it.

  106. Sue Walker March 1, 2010 at 2:48 pm #

Your images are truly beautiful. I am in the process of creating my photographic website and can only hope people get the pleasure from viewing my photos as I have from yours.
