Now that I’ve been home a bit more than a week, I can begin to process the absolutely extraordinary trip you and Art Wolfe organized to Namibia. It was truly magical; unforgettable in the best sense.
I write to thank you for the extraordinary care you so obviously took in planning and executing the trip — everything was perfect. Your skill and sensitivity as a guide and as a photographer are exemplary and very much appreciated.
You made my experience of this fascinating country deeply moving and I suspect forever memorable.

What a memorable and fun time spent with Denis Glennon and Tony Hewitt on their Masterclass weekend in Karri Valley.
Despite bad weather we managed to take a lot of different pictures at numerous locations, learnt more about the thought process, creative inspiration that goes with producing a powerful image and also met a lot of like-minded people who share the same passion.
I personally also found out about Live View on my camera which I hopefully can use to compose some award winning images.
Thanks very much Denis and Tony for answering all the technical and creative questions that were thrown in your direction, you certainly both impressed me with your willingness to share your vast knowledge and expertise with all of us.

Well, I’ve been sitting here thinking about what I could say about the Masterclass at Karri Valley for quite awhile mainly because there was so much to like about it.
From the absolutely fantastic setting of the Resort, the food, the wine and the excellent service by Resort staff; to the variety of beautiful scenes to photograph.
The excellent discussions involving like minded people through to the awesome presentations facilitated by Tony and Denis.
I think though that the highlight (the Hero Shot) for me was being privilaged to simply hang out with two Photographers, two Gentlemen who, although may be different in their approach, have a deep passion for the art and so obviously enjoy sharing their passion and wisdom.
Thanks to all who attended for a great weekend.
I highly recommended this Masterclass or anything that Denis and Tony are involved in.

I am sure everybody, from the experienced professional to the beginner enthusiast, came away from the weekend with something special.
I know every image I take in future will have me thinking ‘Okay, what is it about this scene that compels me to photograph it, what is my story, what is the hero I want to highlight, and how can I translate what I am feeling into my image’?
And this is all before I even press that shutter.
Your willingness to share your knowledge and personal experiences in such a sensitive and compelling manner and your ‘hands on’ assistance has certainly enthused and inspired me to release my ‘inner artist’.
And on top of all that it was a fun weekend!

A fantastic Masterclass at Karri Valley last weekend (August 2013).
Your different but complementary styles offered something for everyone, from beginner to professional photographer.
Your incredible knowledge, generosity with time, and willingness to impart information with endless patience and tact, topped off with a touch of humour, meant that everyone took away more than just minimal new information, whether it be in relation to seeing the shot, technical considerations or advice about equipment.
Despite the inclement weather – torrential rain and a howling gale, there always was an image to be found.
And, I learned that a bit of rain on the camera is not a show-stopper – visualize Tony heading off into the storm for that one last shot.

Hi Denis and Tony,
A sincere thank you for a most enjoyable and constructive Masterclass over the weekend.
The amount of knowledge and practical demonstrations presented was staggering.
All delivered with good humour and in a way even the most basic photographer could grasp.
Not to say this Masterclass was for beginners.
No, it can cater for any photographer at any stage of their craft, even professional photographers.
Both Denis and Tony were always close at hand to answer our questions and give advice.
It really was a joy to see many great examples of fine art photography.
To hear the story behind the images made it an even more rewarding experience.
Of particular interest to me was how to “find the light”.
I found the practical demonstrations well presented and informative.
When shooting out in the field, under difficult weather conditions, our hosts proved that there are photo opportunities everywhere, and that we just needed to slow down and take in our surroundings to see our opportunities.
The Rottnest Island Country Club provided a casual and relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy the workshops and presentations.
I have taken much away to think about and apply to my photography.
Would I recommend this Masterclass to others? Definitely!!

A sincere thanks to you both for organising such an excellent weekend.
There has obviously been a lot of work & thought put into organising the weekend with respect to accommodation, meals, transport and of course the Masterclass itself. This excellence was very evident throughout the whole weekend.
What we learn and takeaway from the weekend is of course important and without any doubt the investment in time was well worth it many times over. The Masterclass has significantly enhanced my ability to see and take much better photos and set my goals and ambitions to a completely new level.
I already have “permission” to do another course and I will be looking forward to this, knowing that it will yet again significantly improve my skills.

Teaching or learning composition is not an easy task!
Over the years, I myself have struggled with some of the concepts and have seen others struggle to come to terms with the concept of “good composition”.
I have seen members at camera clubs become supremely defensive when a judge or a mentor provides them with feedback and critique.
Like in most of the other ares of life, good composition in a way is about making hard decisions.
Consciously or unconsciously a photographer makes a decision to include or not include part of a scene in a photograph – to record or not to record a certain image.
While in the process of making these images and conscious & unconscious decisions, most of the photographers make strong emotional attachments to their images without realizing that they are doing it.
Most of the self-evaluations we do about our images, in my opinion, are based on the strength of these emotional attachments rather than the real artistic merit of the images themselves.
This, I think is true for the majority of beginners and intermediate photographers and perhaps even pros! If you don’t believe me, hang around your local camera club after the judging session of a monthly competition!
So what makes a good composition a good composition? A fine art image a fine art image?
What makes a well-composed fine art image different from an image captured to record a memory, an event in history or a fun moment?
I think Mr. Art Wolfe answers these questions very eloquently during his workshop, which in reality was more like a series of lectures – but a really worthwhile series of lectures.
Art starts his main presentation by drawing inspiration from great painters of the past.
He takes the listener through various historical periods of art while pointing out the lessons one can draw from the great masters.
As a person who firmly believes that the artists of the Renaissance period understood light better than most modern-day photographers, I kept on listening to this part of his lecture with utmost fascination.
Art then shrewdly and mathematically deconstructs the rules of composition and presents the listener with a set of well laid out guidelines while showing examples from the great body of work he had created over the years.
He talks about balance, lines, gestures, motion and rhythm as parts of composition and convincingly makes a set of arguments to drive each of his points home.
During this presentation he tells us how he developed this ‘new way’ of thinking and approach over the recent years, and shows us the gradual evolution of his mind and thinking.
He shows us how a person can continue to evolve and learn even after achieving things most others can only dream of.
By the end of his presentation, Art very unkindly takes most of the excuses away from people by ruthlessly dissecting the concept of “good composition”, and teaches the listener even a ‘subjective’ discipline like art can be scientifically deconstructed, and therefore can be learnt, by training one’s mind to take hard decisions!

His Perth one-day seminar was certainly inspiring.
Hearing how Art derives his images from the concepts of many different artists and styles of art was eye opening and really made me consider my own work and its influences – something I hadn’t investigated before.
His willingness to share stories and photography methods was generous to say the least.
I can see how he is not only a skilled photographer but a kind and generous man, whose attitudes to life, art, people, nature and the environment shine through in his majestic images.

I attended Art Wolfe’s photographic workshop in Sydney. I’ve known and followed him as a wildlife photographer, but I’ve discovered that he is much, much more. He’s an artist (painter) in his own right and has studied art. His artistic background influences and inspires his photographic work. He has created beautiful, beautiful images and he shows them side by side to artworks by Miro, Manet, Cezanne, Picasso, Turner, Jackson Pollock and more. He talked about positive and negative space, perception, design, how one builds and finds a picture, experimenting and following one’s passion. And he hardly uses flash. His workshop was a genuine treat.

I just wanted to say thank you for bringing Art Wolfe to Australia to share his philosophy, knowledge and experience with us.
I came away from the day totally inspired and with a whole new view on where my photography could go.
An interesting observation I made when debriefing with my wife last night (the workshop was a Xmas and Birthday gift of immense delight) was the ease with which Art was able to weave art history into his workshop.
With a scientific background devoid of art education I was completely hooked by the way in which Art explained art history and then interwove his photographic portfolio.
I will explore this aspect of art/photography further as I seek to develop my own photographic style.
I am relatively new to digital photography and have been pushing myself on a steep learning curve.
Art Wolfe has just projected my knowledge and understanding well ahead of where I expected to be and I will spend the rest of this year practising and practising the principles he espoused.
I now have a direction I was lacking and will be forever grateful for yesterday’s experience.
I will be saving and saving so I can join you or Art or Gavriel on one of the amazing workshops keep reading about in the publications and on the websites.
I have been quite emotional today and have been very moved by Art’s workshop.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to meet and hear Art Wolfe speak.
Initially for us it was a real trip down memory lane, with images of Tibet/ Nepal back in the 1980’s.
But then we were blown away with Art’s images of wildlife (the Bengal tiger was amazing) and his current creative work.
I have always been lead to believe that at some point in everyone’s journey we either need to recreate ourselves, or recreate what we do.
Art has done that with his current work, and his passion for art photography has me gasping and so inspired.

I found the day very inspiring and instructive.

I brought my wife with me to Art’s seminar on Friday evening, and to the workshop on Saturday, and we enjoyed both sessions immensley.
Art’s ability to show his life in photography on Friday night in photos and stories was enjoyable, whilst the Saturday workshop was also enjoyable, inspirational, and entertaining.
The photos and the stories behind them were instructional, and the abilty to question Art on all aspects of his life and work was rewarding.
I got home last night and immediately ordered the DVD series “Travels to the Edge”, and whilst I already have 2 of Art’s books, will be looking to order others.
Again, thank you so much for bringing Art to Australia, and for introducing Gavriel Jucan to us. His own work is brilliant as well.

The Art Wolfe lecture and Seminar were absolutely inspirational. Though not neglecting techniques or equipment the emphasis was on what made impactful and well composed photos that reflcted both the passion and repect for whatever Art photographs.

Last weekend with Art Wolfe.

Well what an awesome experience. I must say that Friday night’s lecture and Saturday’s seminar with Art Wolfe here in Sydney were exceptional. I mean the man is a legend, and to actually have the opportunity learn from the man, be in the same room and shake his hand, was something special, and something I unreservedly recommend to anyone who considers themselves in any way serious about the art and craft of photography.
Art’s Friday evening lecture was a bit of a retrospective talk, delivered with humour and humility. He is one of the great American photographers of the century, and his ability to inspire and inform from his past held the room in respectful awe for nearly two hours.
Saturday was more of “nuts and bolts” session with something for everyone, from enthusiast to seasoned pro. For those who didn’t attend the Friday session he briefly recapped, before launching into a full day seminar covering everything from sourcing inspiration, the art of “seeing”, and composition. After each section there was question time, and if you so desired, there was opportunity for one-on-one time with the Wolfe man to enjoy some less formal banter.
I found Art infinitely approachable and willing to share whatever insight he may have to offer.
I walked away with some gold this weekend. Some quotes that really resonated with me:
“It’s about finding the photos that most people don’t see.”
“Most people are entertained by the skills of other people.”
“Live your passions and you’ll live a longer, happier life.”
“Photograph without prejudice.”

Having worked as a Press Photographer for the last 20 years, I was losing inspiration and motivation for something that is and was my passion. I booked Arts workshop as a spur of the moment thing, I even had doubts about turning up, I would never normally go to something like this. It turned out to be the most inspirational thing I have done. I cannot stop raving about it to my colleagues, I am now shooting more in my free time and loving it.
Art your pictures are amazing, inspiring and I cannot thank you enough for letting us into your world, and Denis for organizing the workshops.

I recently had the opportunity to participate in your Karri Valley Masterclass and what an amazing weekend it was!
You work so well together with your different approaches to photography and to presenting workshops and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire weekend.
For someone like myself who has a science background and has participated in many ‘technical’ or ‘how-to’ courses in photography, your Masterclass “The Hidden Dimension” was a refreshing and inspiring change.
Now I’m consciously seeking depth in my photos and unless the photograph I’m taking means something to me or my intended audience I don’t bother taking it.
Tony, I am amazed at how much thought goes into your images to produce a story in one single picture. You are a true artist and storyteller, it was a privilege to learn from you.
Denis, I’m not sure if you are aware of just how powerful your images are. I am an ecotourism guide today because I was inspired by wildlife and nature images I was exposed to as a child.
I’m sure your photos will inspire a whole new generation of conservationists and wildlife-lovers as well as help educate everyone about this wonderful planet we all share. Please don’t ever stop taking photographs – the world can never have too many of your images.

What a wonderful and inspiring weekend at Karri Valley!
Its so nice to see two very accomplished photographers imparting so much of their knowledge to others.
I feel I’ve learnt so much from the both of you not only technically but visually.
The content you provided on adding emotion and depth to images was invaluable and I feel like I can see and communicate things I couldn’t necessarily see or do before.
The location was fantastic, the lake was stunning in the morning and it was so interesting to see the difference in my photos from the first morning compared to the second morning after applying what i’d learnt from the previous day.
I’ll definitely be signing up for the next one!
In terms of ideas for your next workshop I think somewhere close to Perth would be ideal for those who only have a weekend to spare, perhaps Margaret River.

Thanks for an excellent weekend of fun and learning at Karri Valley.
I felt it was a great experience both ‘on location’ and in your ‘teaching sessions’ back at the resort. I have come away from the weekend with so much more knowledge and will hopefully have opportunity to put it into practice soon.
As I drove home, I found myself wanting to stop about a thousand times to explore numerous photo opportunities, but unfortunately time was against me.
As far as locations for future masterclasses, what about in our ‘own backyard’ so to speak.
The Perth Hills, both the Swan and Avon Valleys or even in and around Fremantle come to my mind as possible locations.
Wherever the location, I will certainly be doing my best to attend other masterclasses in future.

Thank you so much, the Karri Valley Masterclass week-end was fantastic!
The whole thing was a real ‘shot in the arm’ for me, a boost to get me onto the next level. There were lots of nuggets and I’ve added these to my notes of the practical information and ideas you provided during the workshop forums.
I have brought home at least one shot that I feel is a real ‘WOW shot’ for me. I believe you ensured everyone has, or had help to get THAT one shot – that was a key success factor for people!
The weather, accommodation, food, environment, people, camaraderie was fantastic. Your instruction, help, support and advice was also terrific.
I really liked the dawn session on Sunday explaining the light, angles across the lake with the fog, composition etc, … then the portrait instruction – so easily and naturally executed – a great confidence booster when a couple of my shots taken behind Tony turned out trumps, largely due to the light, positioning and instruction on the subject.
The Saturday night exercise of people introducing someone else’s photograph was fun and enlightening, as was Tony’s gentle ‘critique’ of images. For me, it helped me see why I really liked a photograph, but there was something missing …. now I know what it is. Great learnings.
Seeing both your slideshows with your magnificent images was inspiring. Both of you are so talented – it stimulated me to want to do better.
You asked for other ideas of where to run a workshop. What about Broome, timing it for the stairway to the moon would be wonderful to include, along with other great opportunities up there?
One last thing – I’d like to see an agenda/program for future workshops to be prepared for what’s coming up and when (understood it’s also nice to play things by ear, depending on weather, mood, preferences etc). A couple of others expressed same.
I look forward to having more learnings opportunities with you both.

I was just so ready for almost everything you had to say, having just got back from South/Eastern Africa and game drives in the Madikwe Game Reserve, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Kirawira Hills section of the Serengeti. I felt I wasn’t getting the photographic results I wanted during those game drives, and heaven forbid, got out the camera manual to try to work out what I should try to change. I twigged on to a couple of “improvements”, but I could have done much better with the benefit of the “rules of thumb” you introduced in a space of less than 15 minutes!
I was particularly interested in Shem’s approach to gear, as I had decided to keep to the smallest/lightest possible Canon travelling combo for handling everything from people, buildings,landscapes, flowers and wild-life. I was delighted to see that Shem can make
that work – so I am sure I can too.
Having shot 700Gb of photos while travelling since I picked up my Canon DSLR in May 2010, I am now seeking to put more vision into
my photography – again, Shem’s story helped point a path.
Overall, an invaluable experience that has signposted my future direction.

Firstly many thanks for the opportunity to attend the ‘Nature & Wildlife Photography’ seminar, om 20 August. I am a volunteer with Bold Park (running the weeding, bush regeneration and monitoring groups) and when I’m not doing that I walk round Bold Park taking photos to record the birds and flowers. Bold Park is managed by BGPA (King’s Park).
The seminar was insightful, interesting and I learnt a lot of valuable hints and information. The photography was stunning and I found both your stories re the path you had travelled to get to the point your at, very interesting. It reinforced some of the conclusions I had come to just by observing particular species of birds every day.
It was a wonderful day which further fuelled my passion for nature photography.

I am one of the fortunate Rottnest Voluntary Guides who was lucky enough to secure a place at the ‘Nature and Wildlife Photography’ Seminar.
I found all the presentations very informative and inspirational and I just listened spellbound for the day. I really loved it.
Verbalising the transition from film to digital was very helpful. Then our initial response into digital and later, with time and thought, using it creatively to follow our own path and not be locked into rules.
All the photographs were magic and I particularly liked the photos of the osprey. It has really set my mind working and I can’t wait to go to my favourite island and capture my image of this wonderful bird.

I have over the past few months been thinking of ‘recording’ images I see versus ‘creating’ images ‘I don’t see’ and your talks validated this process to me.
The only problem I now have is trying to organise TWO trips to Africa – one in the wet and one in the dry!!!
Thanks to Shem for freely giving some personal advice on settings.
Maybe, and only maybe, there may have been a little too much time spent on the history of creating images/inspiration (though needed)… and this is only because I was too eager to hear “all the other great stuff”.
I sat in the passenger seat on the 2 hour return trip home ‘pretending’ I was in Africa taking shots of the wildlife – ibis,pelicans,crows,kite,spoonbills, parrots, horses, cattle – along the highway. It is amazing how much life there was.. as my eyes were now much more ‘open’!!
Hope to catch up in the future – preferably in Africa!

The Nature and Wildlife Seminar at Perth Zoo was a really great day for me. All the talks were great, and there was much that I learned from the “masters” who spoke, not just on technique but the practice and philosophy of capturing images and the photographic art.
But most of all it was inspirational. Any seminar that makes me want to rush out with a camera to start applying the content to the real world of image capture is a wonder.
And that’s just how I felt.

Time has flown since the New Norcia Masterclass but I still find myself thinking a lot on what I experienced and learned through the weekend.
I enjoyed the pace of the weekend’s activities and the opportunities to learn through absorption.
The discussions were very topical and I found myself seeing more through the viewfinder and attempting to engage a quieter, if not fully “quiet” mind.
The choice of venue was inspired, as was the mixing of photography with philosophy, through the opportunity to engage with representatives from the Abbey.
The weekend was made more rewarding by sharing it with a great group of people.
The weekend has inspired me to get out more and photograph and focus more on the creative side.

Thank you both for another wonderfully well organized and thought provoking weekend of fabulous photography!
New Norcia is steeped in the history of Western Australia and the architecture reflects that admirably.
You excelled yourselves by providing access to Dom Michael with his most erudite discussion about “The Quiet Mind ‘ and its value in photography -and Life itself!
The significant art collection of the monks was also well summarized by the humorous yet humble Dom Chris with his 30 year experience of the monastery.
Combine this with a detailed analysis of High Dynamic Range by Denis, and the walk-and-talk of Tony; we all tried hard to produce better images of the wonder-filled interiors of the churches we were shown.
Fortuitously[..or not? ] we were present during a near-full moon which provided special shooting opportunities.
What will you do for the next Masterclass??…bring it on!

Thank you for yesterday’s Printing Masterclass. I am one of those photographers that has not invested in a printer as yet as it was like “too hard to go there”. So yes all my images are on the hard drives and basically I am the only one that views them. Well that is all about to change now as I am armed with the information I need to take the plunge into printing and will even have the confidence to outsource for larger prints.
I am not a technical sort but Nick made it possible to see through the technical jungle and helped me understand what I need to do.

The Rottnest Weekend was absolutely fabulous. Everyone who attended loved it. I never thought I would get up at 4am two mornings in a row without complaining! Many thanks for an unforgettable weekend, the organisation and location were both flawless. The group was better than one could reasonably expect, and the pace perfect.
Tony inspired me with his easy, enthusiastic style. He opened my eyes to possibilities that I had not seen before, and left me keen to explore new areas in my own work. I particularly enjoyed the analysis of Tony’s prints, and the explanation of the process of turning an image from photo to fine art.

This short email is simply to say “Thank you sincerely” for undertaking your holiday/photo safari to Kenya with me.
As it was a first photo safari to Kenya for Denis Glennon Photography/Iconic Images, a great deal of research and planning was undertaken prior to selecting the destination, the on-ground handler and the individual camps/lodges.
I trust this pre-departure work and the on-ground services provided for each and every participant (i) a memorable holiday and (ii) a hard-drive full of iconic images.
The group worked extremely well together and I thank you individually for the generous manner in which you cooperated with the busy schedule and the intermingling of photographers in the various vehicles.
Best wishes with the enjoyable task of culling and selecting many iconic images over the next few weeks (or months).
As soon as I have a suitable venue and date confirmed for the “Get-Together Night” I will let you know; as discussed in Kenya, I am targeting the first week in November.
I will keep you informed of new photo safaris and if you have any thoughts on how I might enhance future ones, please do let me know.

The wildlife images on your website are stunning and inspirational. Are you organizing a photo safari to Africa in 2011? If yes, I would like to join you. How do you capture the amazing shots of the whales? You should write an article on what you call ‘Conservation Photography’ as many photographers in Australia would be interested to read it.
Your images are truly beautiful. I am in the process of creating my photographic website and can only hope people get the pleasure from viewing my photos as I have from yours.
