Iconic Experiences

I will always remember, witnessing my first dawn over the Sahara Desert; hearing the first sounds of Mosi-Oa-Tunya (Victoria Falls) and seeing its spray in the air, from nearly 5 kms away; capturing my first images of ice blocks the sixe of motor venicles rushing over the edge of Niagara Falls, in winter; sailing in 50 knots winds through the Red Sea and traversing the Suez Canal; walking up the steps in the Louvre and seeing the statue of Nike (the “Winged Victory of Samothrace”); capturing photographs of my first whale shark whilst swimming frantically to keep abreast of the biggest fish on the planet; capturing in sharp detail the breach of my first humpback whale, and being on the top of Table Mountain.

I have treasured my first visit to Cecil Rhode’s grave in the Matopo Hills; my first images taken from a helicopter in The Kimberley, and my fist encounter with a leopard in Kenya.

I cannot imagine going to India and not photographing on a train, whether it is in an air-conditioned first-class sleeper or a congested commuter in Mumbai, or going to the Great Barrier Reef without an underwater camera housing.

I have seen a lot of sights on my travels, but the memories that have stayed with me longest and the images I treasure most are those directly linked to “experiences” and not images just connented to travel or tourist activities.

Special remembrances and treasured images nearly always happen through what I call “serendipitous experiences” and this is what Iconic Experiences are about.

On Iconic Experiences we constantly tackle the greatest challenge we photographers face, i.e. how to translate the jumbled real world into a simplified iconic representation of what we see in our mind’s eye.

We organise only one or two photographic travel events per year, to iconic locations.

The next one, in 2010, is a wildlife and natural world photographic safari to capture iconic images of the best Africa has to offer. This event will be an unforgettable adventure with knowledgeable and skilled drivers, professional guides and support teams to ensure participants have the best opportunity to photograph iconic images of Africa’s game, landscapes, people and culture.

It will not be inexpensive, but it will be unforgettable.
