Preparing Images

Preparing Images

Images need to be in JPEG format. If your images are in a TIFF format, convert them to a JPEG by using a program such as Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Photo Elements.

First ensure that they are in 8 Bits/Channel as you cannot save a JPEG image in 16 Bits/Channel.

Image>Mode> 8 Bits/Channel

Name your image correctly with surname first, middle name initial (if you have a middle name), followed by your first name, add a dash and then the number of the print. For example; if John L Smith is naming his second image ready to upload, he would name it:

SmithLJohn‐2

To save the file as a JPEG in sRGB colour format with the longest side at 1400 pixels, follow the numbered sequence below set out in this diagram from Photoshop:

1. Open your image and then choose File>Save for Web & Devices. This will bring up the dialogue box pictured above and automatically saves your image into an sRGB colour space

2. Choose ‘JPEG’ and ‘Very High’ settings on the top right for good quality

3. Set the number of pixels at 1400 on the longest side of your image (in this case the image was in panorama format so 1400 pixels was set for the width). Make sure the Constraint Proportions box is ticked

4. For Quality (if your image is going to be smaller than the original), choose ‘Bicubic Sharper’

5. The bottom left will show you the size of your finished JPEG file, in this case 246Kb which is well within the maximum 1Mb allowed per image for the competition.

6. Press ‘Save’ at the top right

For people that don’t have Adobe Photoshop or Photo Elements, there are numerous pieces of software available on the Web to resize images, one you may wish to consider is jpegsizer, available as a Home and Pro version. The instructions are clear and easy to follow
