iconPHOTO Judging

The judging of the iconPHOTO competition has been completed recently and it took nearly five straight hours to pick the winners, such was the quality of the images entered. My thanks to my fellow judges, Australian landscape icon, Richard Woldendorp, respected APS photographer and judge, Dr Phillip Deschamp and from Canon Australia, passionate photographer, Mat Beetson.

From nearly 1500 entries, the judges finally selected 50 images and then started the long process of debate to arrive at a first and second, three third places and 5 highly commended. To the minds of the judges, the final cull of images would have scored highly in any national or international competition. Judges looked for clear mastery of the skill and craft of the final image together with  creative vision to produce a powerful photograph.

Below is a short statement from each of my three fellow judges:

Richard Woldendorp:

The winner was not an obvious one and it took quite a bit of deliberation between us because of the quality of the top ten photographs.  But after a lot of consideration we all agreed on the final choice.  I am always looking out for the most creative photograph.  If you want to be in control of your image through the computer and digital enhancement and manipulation, there is a good possibility that you close your eyes to the endless variety that is our real visual world, with all of its possibilities.  In other words you might miss the ‘real’ picture.

Dr Phil Deschamp:

The task of choosing winners from so many excellent images was extremely daunting. It was also difficult because each of the four judges had different preferences.

After several reviews we reduced the number of photographs to about 50 and then commenced the extremely difficult task of choosing the top 10. It would have been possible to mount an argument for awarding the top prizes to almost any of this group. Eventually we focused on trying to choose images that we thought were most clearly iconic. The top three images stood out in our collective minds on the basis of their excellence in photography and the fact that they could be considered iconic with regard to their respective subject matter. We express our congratulations to all of the photographers who enter this competition.

Mat Beetson:

The 10 final images is a great representation of the quality of images entered into the iconPHOTO competition.  Judging  1st place and place winning images was not an easy task.

It was a lengthy process but yielded a unanimous winner.

Thanks to our entrants, sponsors and judges
