iconPHOTO 09 Competition Entry Requirements
1. The organiser of the competition is Iconic Images International. This annual competition is open to amateur photographers of all nationalities who have access to the internet. Staff from Iconic Images International and people involved with the administration or judging of iconPHOTO 09 are not eligible to enter this competition.
2. The major competition partners with Iconic Images International are, the Australian Photographic Society (APS), Canon Australia and ASUKABOOK.
3. iconPHOTO 09 has one “Open” category, only. Entrants may use image enhancement and digital darkroom techniques to optimize an entry to the competition (e.g. building a panorama or creating an HDR from multiple exposures). Where appropriate, original files may be requested for an image that reaches the shortlist selected by the independent judges.
4. All entries must be made using the on-line Entry Form, on the Iconic Images International website. Prints or images on a CD/DVD will not be accepted.
5. Entries may be colour or black and white images. Images uploaded to iconPHOTO 09, should have sRGB colour space, the longest side no more than 1400 pixels, be a maximum size of 1MB, formatted in JPEG format. No concession will be made by the judges for departure from these requirements. For assistance in preparing images, please see the detailed Preparing Images for Uploading instructions.
6.Name your image correctly with surname first, middle name initial (if you have a middle name), followed by your first name, add a dash and then the number of the print. For example; if John L Smith is naming his second image ready to upload, he would name it:

7. If an image is shortlisted by the judges for a prize or high commendation, the entrant will be asked to submit a high resolution version. The specifications for this high resolution version will be provided, via email, to short-listed entrants. Failure to produce a high resolution version with 14 days of being notified will automatically eliminate an entrant from the shortlist.
8. Entrants may submit a minimum of five (5) and a maximum of ten (10) images. Entry fees are shown in Clause 20, below. Please note the special fee arranged for APS members.
9. An image that has won an award or commendation in a major national or international competition (one receiving more than 500 entries), is not eligible for entry in iconPHOTO 09..
10. All entries must be totally photographic in origin and be the sole work of the entrant. Enhancements to the original image (where made) must also be the sole work of the entrant, or be undertaken under the direction of the entrant.
11. By submitting an entry to iconPHOTO 09, each entrant warrants to Iconic Images International, that the entry is wholly owned by the entrant, is not wholly or substantially copied from any other material, does not defame, cause injury to, invade the privacy of, or otherwise infringe or violate any intellectual property, statutory or lawful rights or of any third party.
12. The entrant must be the sole author and owner of copyright, intellectual property and any other proprietary rights in all images entered in iconPHOTO 09. It is the responsibility of the entrant to ensure they comply with these requirements and own the rights to reproduce their images. Iconic Images International does not, and will not, make any claim on the copyright of entrants’ images. Each entrant will retain copyright and where an image or images are reproduced, the entrant will be given full credit.
13. By entering iconPHOTO 09, the entrant grants to Iconic Images International, and its major competition partners, a non-exclusive licence, for three years, from the date the shortlist is announced, to reproduce any of the winning and commended images for the sole purpose of promoting iconPHOTO competitions. This licence includes, but is not limited to, inclusion of these images (i) on the websites of Iconic Images International and those of the major competition partners, (ii) in displays and exhibitions associated with iconPHOTO competitions, (iii) in Australian Photography magazine, supplements and similar journals, (iv) in marketing and promotional material for iconPHOTO competitions, (v) press announcements and reports in connection with iconPHOTO competitions and exhibitions, and (vi) allowing viewers of the Iconic Images International and competition major partner websites, to view these images on a computer screen, PDA or mobile phone and store such images in electronic form for their personal, non-commercial use. Any other use of these images will only be made after consultation with the entrant.
14. The spirit and ethos of iconPHOTO 09 is to honour and showcase iconic images captured by amateur photographers. Hence, professional photographers are not allowed to enter. A professional photographer is someone who is a member of a recognised professional body, such as the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers (AIPP), or who earns in excess of 50% of their annual income from the practice of photography.
15. Iconic Images International has appointed an independent judging panel to determine the winning and commended images, based on the final shortlist. The decision of the judges is final and Iconic Images International will not enter into discussion or correspondence regarding the judging or organization of iconPHOTO 09.
16. iconPHOTO 09 opens on 5 October 2009 and closes on 31 May 2010.
17. Shortlisted entrants will be contacted, for high resolution versions of selected images, by 18 June 2010.
18. Winners of prizes will be notified of their selection for a prize, but not notified of the final result, by 31 August 2010. The final results will be announced at APSCON 2010. Winners will be encouraged to attend this APS premier event.
19. There are three “major” prizes and five “Highly Commended” prizes, as follows.
- Three (3) day exclusive photographic field workshop on how to enhance visual, technical and emotional impacts in photographs. Nick Melidonis (landscape) & Denis Glennon (wildlife) will work with the winner to hone their skills. Each day the winner will be on field assignments and receive constructive critiques, transforming the way they see and make images
- Return flights from winner’s nearest Australian capital city to Perth (if applicable)
- Full accommodation on the 50 ft. luxury sailing yacht ‘Calypso V’, (see
www.denisglennon.com), off Rottnest Island, Western Australia - Transport to/from andaround Rottnest Island
- An ASUKABOOK of the winner’s choice to a value of $809
- Free attendance at APSCON 2010, inclusive of all events; excluding travel & accommodation
2nd prize
- Canon 5DMkII camera body plus EF24-105mm f/4 lens
- An ASUKABOOK EX 80 side valued at up to $445
3rd prizes
- There are three (3) third prizes of the publication of an ASUKABOOK EX 40 side, each valued at up to $347
“Highly Commended” Prizes
- In addition to the above major prizes there will be five (5) prizes of one (1) year’s free membership of APS
Prizes are not redeemable for cash. If the quality of entry falls below the required standard, in the opinion of the judges, Iconic Images International reserves the right not to award a prize.
20. The winner of the 1st Prize must (i) be available to travel to Perth, Western Australian in late October/early November 2010 (best weather), (ii) be reasonably fit as the places visited will involve walking, some dune and rock climbing, and photographing from boats to maximize photographic opportunities, (iii) provide their own photographic equipment for the field workshop and (iv) provide evidence of their own insurance to cover both travel and equipment.
21. Entry Fees for iconPHOTO 09 are as follows:
- Non-APS members: $50.00 for the first five images.
- APS members: $40 for the first five images.
- Additional images, to a maximum of ten, may be submitted, by all entrants, at a cost of $12.50 each.
- Entrants who decide to join APS as a new member (not a renewal of membership) at the time they submit their entry to iconPHOTO 09, may pay the APS member entry fee (i.e. $40.00 for the first 5 images) and receive a 10% discount on their first year of APS membership.
A “Product Code” entitling the entrant to this 10% discount will be provided on the Tax Invoice/Receipt issued by Iconic Images International, following the uploading of images.
To avail of the 10% discount, please ensure this “Product Code” is inserted in the “Other (please specify)” line, in the box at the bottom right-hand corner of the APS Membership Application form, before forwarding the completed application form, and payment for membership, to APS.

Only one entry (consisting of a minimum of five and a maximum of ten images) per person is permitted; multiple entries by the same person are not allowed.
Entry fees are non-refundable.
All fees are in Australian dollars and include GST.
Images entered must be uploaded via the on-line entry form and must include the total cost of entry, to be eligible for the competition. Payment may be made by credit card or PayPal, only.
Upon completion of the online entry, the entrant will receive, to the email address provided, an automated confirmation of entry, including a receipt, indicating the number of images entered and the amount paid.
22. All images and if requested, high resolution images, are sent at the entrant’s own risk. Iconic Images International will take all care, but the entrant agrees to release Iconic Images International from liability for any loss of, or damage to, materials submitted to iconPHOTO 09.
23. If any entrant is deemed, by the judging panel, to have provided incorrect or false information, including information on the status of APS membership, they will be ineligible to receive any prize.
